Don't be afraid to ask your employer about getting certified. Firstly, they can only say 'no', and secondly they may be impressed with your commitment to self-improvement.
Many businesses have an appraisal system which includes your goals for training. Some companies are part of the Investors in People standard, which measures how well UK businesses achieve success through their staff .
It's up to you and your employer to work out what's best: full funding for your training, just paying for the certification, or a pay rise if you achieve certification on your own! In any case, the effort you make will show that you are a person who wants to progress their skills and prove their expertise.
